At the 37th World Geology Congress held in South Korea, following scientific evaluations, the second phase "World's Top 100 Geological Heritage List" was announced today (August 28, 2024). Salda Lake from Turkey was included in this list, declared as the "representative of MARS on Earth." Additionally, Salda was also included in the list of the world's top 200 Geosites.

UNESCO Turkey Natural Sciences Specialization Committee Chairman Prof. Dr. Nizamettin Kazancı made the following statements regarding this important development: "Cultural and natural assets whose scientific importance has been identified by international organizations such as UNESCO, IUCN, IUGS are not only the superior values of the countries they are located in but of the entire world." Previously, Cappadocia and Pamukkale from our country were also included in this prestigious list.

Salda Lake Science Center: Gained Importance with Its New Mission

With this great appreciation and certification, Salda Lake has become much more important for both Burdur, our university, and our country. The "Salda Lake Science Center," established by the General Directorate of Natural Assets Protection of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and transferred to our university, has gained a much more significant mission following this development. Our university has undertaken the task of researching, protecting, and promoting Salda Lake worldwide with this center. It is thought that this situation will provide significant contributions to our country's science, education, and tourism fields.
